Ft. Lewis Rerail Ops

On Thursday 27 May, 1999 the Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad put three cars on the ground at Ft. Lewis. The next day they came to rerail the cars. Here are the photos and story from that day.

The BNSF crew arrives with their equipment

And Fred brings a Big Red locomotive to help out.

First job is to load some equipment on the locomotive to take down to the job site.

And then switch this caboose that wasn't involved out of the way

Now you can see the three cars involved.

The first car had rear trucks on the ground, the box car all wheels, and third car only the front.

Notice the far rail turned on it's side below

The box car would be the biggest problem. Not only were all wheels on the ground but one rail had been pushed over 90 degrees and was way out of gauge.

The important people get together to discuss how to proceed. From the left, the engineer, the BNSF foreman, the brakeman, and the Ft. Lewis track representative from Public Works.

The equipment is put into place. The 150 ton crane is a highrailer and came down the track from the grade crossing.

Now we are ready for the operation to start.
